Editorial illustration about death.

This is a recent editorial illustration created for John's Hopkins School of Public Health magazine.  It's one of three pieces on the subject of death.  I love illustrating for this client because the topics are always so stimulating.  This particular article referenced the history of death and healthcare and the pervasive pessimism of it all versus the positivity of modern medicine.

Years ago, I caught this small moment during a good friend's chaotic wedding day.  The bride stole a brief few minutes for herself to sit and have a coffee.  The image of with her gown billowed up as she squeezed into the small comfortable chair stayed with me.  The next time I was in the studio, I did this drawing.

Anyone who's been to my studio knows I like to share this little money saving tip.  I've always used disposable palette paper.  Like any illustrator looking to cut down costs, I figured there had to be a cheaper solution than the pads of palette paper I was buying at art stores.  I tried wax paper, but it was too flimsy.  Then I tried Reynolds Freezer paper... Viola!  It works perfectly with acrylics or oils.  I usually buy it for under $4 (75 sq. ft on a roll, 18 inches wide).  I love that I can cut it to a larger size, affording me plenty of real estate to mix color.  There you go, I just saved you a buck or two.
